i was PoRing before you were RoRing, sonny

There continues to be a lot of Ruby on Rails hype. Fine. I will probably take Steve Yegge's suggestions at some point and give Ruby a shot, and if it's really so much better than Perl...by golly I'll switch to it and start calling myself a Ruby hacker. This post isn't really about the religion thing.

What I would however like to point out, for posterity's sake, is that I was there first goddamnit (see "adventures in web app infrastructure" from June 2004). This predates the first RoR release. Albeit it was in Perl using Tangram as the OO-RDB mapper, and it filtered objects through XML::Simple / XSLT for presentation, but it was the same idea. Cut the crap. Cut out all the middleman code that just translates from database tables to objects, objects to pages, etc. and you reduce the sloc of your typical web app by 90%.
